OPAL

The Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL)

Supporting school improvement through better play and playtimes - Making lunchtime fun for everyone!

What is OPAL?

Children in primary schools spend up to 20% of their time playing, yet many schools don’t have a clear, strategic approach to making the most of this vital part of the day. The Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) Primary Programme is a mentor-supported school improvement programme that helps schools transform play into a high-quality, inclusive experience for every child.

OPAL supports schools to develop sustainable, values-led play opportunities that benefit children’s physical health, emotional wellbeing, and overall enjoyment of school. With growing concerns around children’s health and access to outdoor play, OPAL provides a proven approach that makes a positive difference for pupils, staff, and the wider community.

Why OPAL?

  • More effective learning time – children return to class happy, calm, and ready to learn
  • Improved behaviour – fewer incidents and less time spent resolving issues
  • Development of key skills – including creativity, resilience, and cooperation
  • Inclusive play for all – ensuring every child benefits, every day
  • Greater wellbeing – happier, healthier children and staff
